Hiking for Beginners: Your First Trail, Step by Step

Everyone on the trail was a beginner once. The good news: hiking has the lowest barrier to entry of almost any outdoor sport. You don't need expensive gear or elite fitness — you need a good pair of shoes, a realistic trail, and a little preparation.

Pick the right first trail

Choose something short and well-marked: 3–6 km with less than 300 m of elevation gain is a perfect first outing. Look for trails rated 'Easy' and avoid anything that requires scrambling. A shorter, enjoyable hike beats an epic sufferfest every time — the goal of hike number one is wanting a hike number two.

What to wear

  • Sturdy shoes with grip — trail runners or hiking shoes, not fashion sneakers
  • Comfortable sportswear in layers; avoid cotton, which stays wet and cold
  • A hat and sunscreen, even in cooler months
  • A light jacket — mountain weather changes fast

What to carry

For a half-day hike you need surprisingly little: 1.5–2 litres of water, a snack or sandwich, your phone (charged), a small first-aid kit, and a bag for your trash. Everything else is optional.

Pace yourself

The most common beginner mistake is starting too fast. Walk at a pace where you can still hold a conversation. Take short breaks, drink before you're thirsty, and remember: the trail will still be there tomorrow. Turn around whenever you need to — that's not failure, that's good judgment.

Better yet, join a group. Hiking with an experienced club like Assia Wanderers means a certified guide, a planned route, and new friends who remember exactly what their first hike felt like.
