How to Read Trail Difficulty: Easy, Moderate, Hard, Expert

Every hiking club labels its trails, but what separates 'Moderate' from 'Hard'? Here's how we rate our hikes at Assia Wanderers — and how to choose the right one for you.

Easy

Up to 5 km with gentle climbing (under 200 m of gain), on clear paths. Suitable for families, kids, and anyone who can walk for an hour. Example: our Assia Cross hike or the L Mseilha coastal walk.

Moderate

6–12 km with 300–550 m of elevation gain, some uneven terrain, and 4–6 hours out. You should be comfortable walking uphill for extended stretches. Most of our weekend hikes — Hamatoura, Tannourine, Kfarhelda — sit here.

Hard

12+ km or 600+ m of gain, steep or exposed sections, full-day commitment. You need real cardio fitness and sturdy footwear. Not a first hike, but a worthy goal for your second season.

Expert

Long distances, serious elevation, technical terrain, or winter conditions. Prior experience required — talk to the guide before signing up.

The numbers that matter

  • Elevation gain tells you more than distance — 8 km with +600 m is harder than 14 km on the flat
  • Duration includes breaks; plan around it
  • Terrain matters: loose rock and mud slow everything down

When in doubt, start one level easier than you think you need. Finishing strong and smiling beats crawling to the car — and it means you'll be back for the harder one.
